TAS Chapter Event - The ‘A’ Factor – Challenges of Risk Management in Antarctic

Join the TAS Chapter President, Andrew Johnson, and Guest Speaker, Martin Boyle, Risk & Business Continuity Manager at Australian Antarctic Division present on how risks are managed across the Australian Antarctic. 


Antarctica is the coldest, highest, driest, windiest and most desolate continent on earth. It is not an easy place to get to and from. It is a challenging place to work with everyday tasks can take three times longer than normal. How do you manage risks for an organisation that operates in such a remote and hostile place?  The ‘A’ or Antarctic factor is always present and ready to throw unexpected variables into any operation.  

This presentation will provide insight into how risks are managed across the Australian Antarctic Program and some of challenges faced when building capability in this environment.


Guest Speaker


Martin Boyle, Risk & Business Continuity Manager at Australian Antarctic Divsion 

Martin manages risk, audit & assurance, business continuity, and incident management for the Australian Antarctic Division. Over the past fifteen years, he has been south on many occasions in various leadership and management positions on Antarctic stations, in the field, and on ice breaking vessels.

Martin has more than twenty-five years of experience across the risk and emergency management industry in both private and public sector as a Director, consultant, emergency services manager, and search and rescue operator. He has previously worked for Australian Customs and Border Protection and the Tasmania State Emergency Service.

He was awarded a Certificate of High Commendation from Tasmania Police for Search & Rescue operations in 2002, the Golden Pen Award from the National Emergency Response Journal in 2011, and the Australian Antarctic Program Director’s Award for safety and emergency management in 2019. 

Martin holds a Masters in Emergency Management, BA(Hons) in Business and Information Technology, Advanced Diploma in Public Safety (Emergency Management), Advanced Diploma in Work Health & Safety, Diploma in Project Management, and a Diploma in Business Continuity. He is an internationally recognized Certified Emergency Manager, member of the Business Continuity Institute, and Vice President for the Oceania Region of the International Association of Emergency Managers.

Martin is an Adjunct Lecturer for Charles Sturt University and also an Incident Controller with the National Biosecurity Response Team (NBRT).
